Russian Orthodox Church has to withdraw from inter-Orthodox commission for drafting a message of primates of Local Orthodox Churches - statement by Communication Service of Moscow Patriarchate departm

Patriarch Bartholomaios of Constantinople, in his letter of 7 May 2008, informed Patriarch Alexy of Moscow and All Russia of his intention to invite primates of Local Orthodox Churches to Constantinople this October for a fraternal meeting and joint pilgrimage to places hallowed by the preaching of St. Paul as the Church of Constantinople has declared 2008 the Year of St. Paul. In particular, he invited His Holiness Patriarch Alexy with a delegation and asked him to assign a bishop or a priest to an ad hoc commission for drafting a message of the primates to be adopted by the upcoming meeting. The drafting commission was to begin its work on 19 June 2007 at the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s Metropolia of Rhodes. In his reply of 3 June 2007, Patriarch Alexy thanked Patriarch Bartholomaios for the invitation and informed him that Archpriest Nikolay Balashov, DECR secretary for inter-Orthodox relations, and A. Churyakov, a DECR staff member acting as interpreter, were assigned to the drafting commission from the Russian Orthodox Church.

Estonian church problem in light of negotiations between Patriarchates of Moscow and Constantinople on 26 March 2008 in Zurich

Statement by Communication Service of Moscow Patriarchate's Department for External Church Relations
Delegations of the Patriarchates of Moscow and Constantinople held negotiations on 26 March 2008 in Zurich to discuss their differences concerning the situation of the Orthodox Church in Estonia, which had forced the Russian Orthodox Church delegation to withdraw from the meeting of the Joint International Commission for theological dialogue between the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Churches, which took place on 8 October 2008 in Ravenna, Italy. The withdrawal was caused by the fact that a representative of Constantinople's church jurisdiction in Estonia was invited to the meeting as a participant from the autonomous Estonian Orthodox Church that is not recognized in this canonical status either by the Russian Orthodox Church or other Local Orthodox Churches. The invitation had been sent by the Orthodox co-chairman of the Commission, Metropolitan John of Pergamon, Patriarchate of Constantinople, without any consultation with representatives of other Local Orthodox Churches. Acting on requests coming from the mass media, the DECR Communication Service has issued the following memorandum reflecting the position taken by the Russian Orthodox Church at the recent negotiations in Zurich.

Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia: Paschal Message

Come, O people, let us hymn the Saviour's resurrection on the third day,
through which we have been released from the indestructible bonds of hades
and all received incorruption and life, crying aloud:
O thou who wast crucified, buried and rose again,
save us through thy resurrection, O thou alone who lovest mankind!

Stanza for Lord, I have cried. for Vespers of Tuesday of Bright Week

Beloved in the risen Christ Your Graces the archpastors, God-loving presbyters, deacons, honourable monks and nuns, pious Orthodox lay men and women - faithful children of the Church!
From the depths of my heart I congratulate all of you, my dear ones, on Christ's bright resurrection - the most joyful feast for Orthodox Christians. Again our churches are replete with Paschal rejoicing. Again and again we relive the great mystery of the Redemption that has liberated those who follow Christ from the dominion of sin and death. As St Peter the Apostle says, our Lord and Saviour who himself 'bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness' (1 Pet 2:24).
